What do you do with a broken heart?

What do you do with a broken heart?
I’ve learned that just when you think things are going to get brighter, another dark cloud can form and hang over you. Everything in us wants to scream, “No!” But that’s why we must run to God’s Word. Psalm 42 is such a wonderful example of a tormented soul that knows what to do with his anguish.
Firstly, you might as well tell the Lord the truth about the way you feel because He knows it anyway and you can’t hide anything from Him. The psalmist tells the Lord that he’s in agony. He feels forgotten, oppressed, taunted by his enemies (v.9). He asks, “Why so downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me?” (vs. 5 & 11). These questions come after he has made it perfectly clear why he feels this way. In essence it’s a rhetorical question to himself because he tells the Lord exactly why he feels downcast and disturbed.
But then comes his wonderful response and he speaks it to himself. Oh, that I might learn to talk to myself the same way! ”Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.”
Praise Him. He’s worthy of praise. Why? Because He’s our Savior and our God. Did you hear that? He’s my Savior… He saved me, from sin and death, and brought me into His glorious light, He forgave me, He washed me with His precious blood and now He calls me His own and He’s my God. O Hallelujah! I will praise Him.
So, what do you do when your heart is broken? You give it to Jesus. You praise Him, your Savior and your God, because He’s worthy.

There are many of the Psalms that are a source of encouragement for me whenever I feel broken-hearted, sad, and alone, they remind me of God’s amazing love for me. I think we forget how much He loves us and wants to mend our hurts (and only He can), perhaps we just need to be reminded. One of my favorite verses is Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in times of trouble”. Jesus Christ is my very best friend, He is always there when I need Him, He catches me whenever I stumble, He picks me up when I am down, He dries my tears, and promises never to leave me. What more can you ask of a friend than that? As fellow believers, it is true, we should be lifting each other up in prayer. In prayer we draw on His power and strength to help us through each day. Thank you Jesus that you hear us when we cry!

Oh, but if all broken hearts would answer this call. Too many of us want to blame God when things get dark; even want to flee or ignore God and His love, forget what was done on the cross; give ourselves over to helplessness, hopelessness, and…sin. How is it, after being saved and cleansed, that we too often give ourselves back to “the dark side” when life hurts?
We really need to hold each other up in prayer – uh, as a lifestyle!
