Damaris Carbaugh is one of the most moving musicians I’ve ever encountered. Her voice is a unique mix of mellow tones and soothing harmonic charm that one doesn’t encounter often. More importantly, the anointing on her life to deliver God’s word through song is evident not merely by the way she sings but the way she lives. She and her family are a gift to the body of Christ. — Priscilla Shirer, Bible teacher & author

Some of you WERE…

03/10/2009

Here is the passion of my heart… the gospel.

I sing gospel music, not because it’s my favorite style of music because actually, it’s not, but because I believe in the gospel.

The gospel is the good news that Jesus died for our sins.  He shed His precious blood so that we could be set free from that which has enslaved us, sin.  Paul identifies a list of sins, not an exhaustive one either, but nevertheless a list: sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, male prostitutes, homosexuals, thieves, greedy ones, drunkards, slanderers, swindlers… but here me out now, when he’s done with that list he says something that is amazing! This is what he says, I Cor. 6:11  …”And that is what some of you WERE.  But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”  They did not remain in their sinful condition, but were changed.

Most of you reading know this but why exactly do you think Jesus willingly came and lived the perfect life, that you and I could never have lived, and was brutally and horrifically slaughtered on a cross?!  So that we would have singing material in our cantatas?  NO!  He died that way because that was the ONLY way to satisfy the wrath of God that was coming, and will come, due to those sins that we have committed.  If there’s anything I want never to lose sight of it is the seriousness of my sin and what it took for God to forgive me.  He loves you and saw your need and did the only thing that can set you free and make it possible for you to be included in that amazing statement Paul made… “that is what some of you were” but you were washed, and justified by our precious, sweet, and kind Savior.

Some think that that church people are judgmental or hypocritical, but don’t judge a movement by some of its less ardent followers.  His people do have compassion and we do hurt for people who struggle.  That’s why we are not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God unto Salvation.  Is saying that something is a sin a way of not having compassion?  Jesus told that poor woman who was caught in adultery, “Where are those who condemn you? Gone?… well, neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more.”  To tell her to “go and sin no more” would have been cruel unless He knew that what He would do to atone for her sin would enable her to lead a life that would please God and cause her to be included in, once again that amazing verse, “that’s what some of you were.”

For years I pursued a secular career.  I did not want to sing “Changed” or “Let Them Know” but songs like “Why did you leave me, Baby?” and all I wanted was for people to scream out my name in some huge arena.  I didn’t care one bit if anyone was going to Hell.  I wanted your adoration and your money so that I could live in luxury and ease.  Honestly, I really don’t think it gets any more depraved than that.  In a small, poor city in Argentina, God showed me who I was, and it was pretty disgusting.  But He forgave me! He really did!  And now all I want people to know is His forgiveness and what it cost Him.

He loves you, and like the song says, “He gave His life what more could He give, oh how He loves you, (put your name here) and me.”

Because He loves us,
Dámaris Carbaugh

I truly believe that God gave you the gifts to sing Gospel because when you have a voice instrument as you have,it Glorifies HIM.

I am one of 13 pastors in our church Kansas City Baptist Temple. What is the possibility of you coming to Kansas City and also do you sing in Spanish also.

  2. Jesus Christ did what only He could do, He paid the ultimate price for my sin, and I am so thankful that I am saved by His grace, that I am forgiven, for His abundance of love, and His mercy which is new every morning. I am so thankful that we have something worth singing about, because there’s nothing else worth singing about. To me, singing gospel music is my way of celebrating what Christ did for me on that cross so that I could have eternal life. Hallelujah! Thank you Jesus!

  3. Praise the Lord! Sister you have influenced me since that days in the early 70′s when you were on Day of Discovery. I was a child (OH MY GRACIOUS….11,12?) and at that time the ONLY one saved in my mothers house…but I could turn on the tv or the radio WWDJ Hakensack NJ & listen to the Word & you ministering in song…I even remember the soda jingle you did…(SMILE) WOW! You let me know that it was a GREAT THING to sing in a RICH ALTO voice and have the ANOINTING of GOD all in it!. God bless you sister for there are MANY CHRISTIAN/GOSPEL SINGERS that are out now singing songs but very few that the anointing rests on them and you can FEEL the tangible presence of God.
One day I pray that we may meet and get the chance to talk…

  5. Oh Damaris. So cool to not know you yet share the same Spirit. Pray with me please regarding a fallen sister who is seeking to be restored but is just in over her head and is gasping for air. If it could happen to her it could happen to any of us.
We mustn’t be judgemental but we are hypocritical, even the ardent-even if we do have compassion and care; sorry if you disagree. I know that God’s love never comes up short but in my 51 years I can honestly say I’ve never met any who love the way love is defined in 1 Corinthians 13, not even in the church. I recognize that love comes from God but i get more from my non saved friends than from people of the church. Sorry.
Don’t judge me. But please pray for my soul suffering friend’s restoration!
Jesus is truly the Way, the Truth, and the Light.
Hoping to catch you in concert soon, Damaris. Keep speaking the truth, woman!
