Rod and Damaris love Jesus! Their passion for Christ and for the gospel runs deep. They are true servants and lovers of the Lord and of His people. Any time I am around them, I am drawn irresistibly into the presence of God. His Spirit is evident in their lives and ministry in an unusual way. — Nancy Leigh DeMoss, author, Revive Our Hearts radio host

NYC meets Kentucky

11/18/2008

Staff of Victorious Women and Me

I’m a city girl. A New York City girl.  And almost every weekend my travels take me to a different city.  This past weekend I was in Paintsville, Kentucky, in the Appalachian Mountains.  This is about the fourth time I’m with this sweet group who hold a semi-annual conference called “Victorious Women.”  Every time I’m with them I fall more in love with them.  What is it about these particular women that makes me want to be with them more and more?  They couldn’t be more different than me, couldn’t sound more different than me, and yet I feel so at home with them.  Why?  I think this time I figured it out!

I don’t scare them one bit!  You might be asking, “Dámaris, do you usually scare people?”  Well, I hope not but I know that my way of speaking can be quite different than what some country folk are used to.  These ladies make me feel like I’m their crazy little sister that’s come home to visit.  When I’m with them I just feel like it’s a little bit like heaven.  It’s as if we’ve known each other all our lives.  Could this be the blessed unity that the Apostle Paul is speaking about when he says in Colossians 3:11 “Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, Barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.”

I can say with the same assurance… when I’m with these women in Paintsville, Kentucky, “Here there is no city girl or mountain girl, but Christ is all, and is in all.”  Thank you Lord, for the way you bring your children together in sweet fellowship.

  1. Sorry it has taken me so long to respond, but today I was sitting down and working on my Christmas cards, and then I was listening to my Christmas CD and I had to stop and just think and pray for you. You both are such a blessing to me… I wish everyone could know you the way that we do… Give yourself a hug from me.

    Love,
    Faith

  2. Ditto to what Carol said! I was thinking on Sunday that these retreats always seem so short and we always want more. Then it hit me, and you said it, this is a taste of heaven. When that blessed day finally comes we will have all the time (rather, all eternity) with HIM and each other. Looking forward to that day sister!

    Love,
    Robin

p.s. I am really enjoying “The Heart of God” album

  3. Rod and Damaris,

Thank you for your kind words…they are very much felt and returned. Your messages always hit home – the day after I got home, my Spurgeon devotional was on glorifying God. But more than the messages, it’s that “Holy Spirit – Something Extra” that you bring with you that turns out to be such a blessing.
Your words in your blog make me look all the more forward to the Great Reunion soon to come! Love, Cindy (the ‘skit’ lady)

  4. Hi, City Sis:>)
I loved your blog. It makes me mighty homesick for you…and I loved the hawk picture, Rod. THANKS, both of you, for your loving words and deeds. You are so much more of a blessing to us than you can possibly know. We are all still “feeding” on the meat and fruit of the weekend. WOW! God’s presence and work was evident. We do speak the same language, you know…the language of the heart. (It just sounds a little different…The purple dino says it all…”I love you, you love me, we’re a happy family”…all in Jesus. “We un’s jist love ya, blue grass or green, gravel or tar, chicken legs or “pigs feet”:>)
“Y all com on back!” We mountain “foreigners” born abroad have a saying,
“We weren’t born in Kentucky but we got here as soon as we could.” Get here as soon as you can. Thanks for gracing our home. Carol (This response is a first for me…second try, however)
