I’ve always been deeply blessed by the ministry of Damaris Carbaugh, not just by the words she sings but by how deeply she feels them! Her music always points us beyond ourselves to Christ, who is the focus of her life and ministry. Let her bless you with her songs of inspiration and hope! — Dr. Erwin Lutzer, Moody Church, Chicago

Christmas is a time for family.  This year, people will drive, fly or use any variety of transportation to get together with family, even if they don’t see them at any other part of the year.  And sometimes, try as one might, a family Christmas with everyone is just not possible.

Of course, many people cannot spend Christmas with their whole family, but this is the first time in 25 years that our four have not been together.

Or is it?

James is in Japan with the Navy, and will be for a few years yet.  We were at Dámaris’s brother’s home for dinner.  Fourteen time zones apart and on opposite sides of the world.   By God’s grace, and the internet, we were able to talk to James “face to face,” larger than life.   In fact, we spoke to him for well over 90 minutes, and he had our attention better than he would have if he was actually in the room, thanks to a big TV screen and a serious sound system!  We talked about his first snowboarding lesson, Luke 2, sushi, church hunting and more.

On this day when we celebrate the birth of God’s Son, the Redeemer of the world and the Lamb of God who takes away our sin, we also thank God that He made a way to warm our hearts and allow our family to be together again, even if James couldn’t be home for Christmas.  Tinsel, gifts and lights really pale compared to knowing that our son and daughter are serving the Lord wholeheartedly.

Dámaris and I hope that your Christmastime has been joyous, despite the fact that it can have its stresses.  Always remember that Jesus came to give us life–new life in Him, and indescribable peace.  God cares for you, and sent His very best–His only son, to reveal His love and to cleanse us from all sin.  It is a Gift.  The Gift.  Make sure that you don’t leave here without it.

  1. This is my first Christmas in about 8 years that I will not be spending with my family in the Virgin Islands or California, so I totally understand. Yes, Jesus came to give us His love and peace and showed us how to live–sharing that love and peace with others. Wishing you ALL God’s richest blessings for this season.

PS: who is the Redskins’ fan? That’s my absolute, all-time sports team (heart has been broken these last several years) win or lose. :)
